My Love for Drummin'
Good morning peoples. It’s Derrick Dyer. I want to talk to you about my love for drumming and playing keyboards. I fell head over heels for the drums when I was five years old. I was watching TV apparently, a music video with my mother, and when the drummer came into shot I started mimicking him. After the video had finished I carried on and wouldn’t stop talking about it for nearly a month. Then my parents decided to take me for drum lessons. I was hooked. I haven’t gone more than two weeks without playing drums for the past 15 years!
Some of my favourite drummers, and what I count as inspiration are Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones), John Bonham (Led Zepplin), Dave Grohl (Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age), Tony Williams (Miles Davis’ drummer) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer). All of them are simply incredible and pioneers of their scenes. Charlie Watts has been the Stones’ drummer for 50 years. I hope I can still drum like I do now when I am his age.
I managed to achieve Grade 8 drums by the age of 16 and I am currently studying music at university. I started to play keys shortly after I achieved Grade 8. I just wanted to test myself on a completely different musical instrument. Whilst drums will always be my number one, the piano offers me a different release. I change my musical ethos totally when I sit down to the piano, my mind sets free and I turn into a soppy player of ballads! I do love my 80s ballads though. When I am drumming though I counteract that and turn into a crazy person. Just something about the drums that makes me go wild!
