Forming the Band

Things have been going really well with my new Fender Jazzmaster. She plays like a dream and I’m enjoying using her so much that I practice at every given opportunity.  My friends and I have had a couple of jams too, just doing covers of some of our favourite musicians at the moment. My friend James is playing bass, James’ wife Susie in on drums, and I’m lead guitar and vocals. We’re actually sounding pretty good together. Susie is an incredible drummer. She was in an all girl punk band before she settled down and had children. They were pretty well known in our local area and were even getting gigs in London.  Susie is a lot more rock ‘n’ roll than James and I.  We’e both heavily influenced by bands like the Beach Boys, The Everley Brothers and more modern bands such as High Llama and Animal Collective. Susie’s influences, on the other hand, include The Clash, the Dead Kennedy’s and The Ramone’s.  She’s certainly delivering an edgier sound than mine and James’ more mellow, uplifting notes. It seems to work though, somehow.  Susie also writes music and I’ve been playing around with writing some vocals, so we’re starting to out together the chorus for our very own song. Exciting times really are ahead. My wife is being driven a bit bonkers during rehearsals.  Susie and James live in a flat and their neighbours complain if a pin drops, so rehearsals are always at my place and we’re all so excited about the band that they are becoming more and more frequent. If my wife wasn’t so utterly tone deaf I would ask her to join us to provide backing vocals, which might pacify her a little! Perhaps I’ll but her a cow bell…
