Elvis’ assistant Joe Esposito

Elvis’ former road manager, and close friend, Joe Esposito has died at 78. He died from natural causes at his home in California. He had been suffering from dementia. Esposito and Presley met whilst serving in the US Army in 1959, they both went through training at Fort Hood, Texas but didn’t actually meet until they were both stationed in West Germany, later that year. Pick up a pencil and let’s get sketching.

Hey everyone.  Today on my arts and entertainment blog I wanted to keep looking into art and different mediums.  I’m fairly old school in that one of my favourite mediums is the humble pencil.  I recently went online and bought myself some new bargain drawing pencils which I absolutely love, you can get them from http://www.easyprices.com/art-collectible.   Read more

Music with Zoom

Welcome back folks.  Today I’ve got another entertainment blog for you, which I thought would fit in well with my recent project of developing a live open-air music area in my garden at home.  I’ve been under a lot of pressure these past couple of years on and off from friends and family to start performing again, namely playing guitar and singing, and while I’ve always wanted to I’ve never really had the inclination to unless I’d got the perfect live rig set up.  Obviously there’s nothing wrong with an amplified electro-acoustic guitar and microphone driven vocals, for the perfect touch, I wanted to share with you the joys of using a zoom pedal.  Read more

Which drum kit should I buy?

05/10/2016 Main

So I’ve been looking to update my drum kit recently. I’ve been playing an old Yamaha drum kit that I’ve had for about 15 years and smashed the bejesus out of it. The skins all need replacing and it gets harder and harder to tune up the toms each time I play. As I’ve come into a bit of money recently I think it’s time to feed my music addiction and buy myself a new rhythm machine. I’ve been looking online at drum kits for sale and have been pretty overwhelmed with the available choice. From Pearl to Gretsch and all the drum manufacturers in between there are some beautiful kits to choose from. So in this blog I’m going to share the possibilities and my thoughts about which one is going to suit me the best! Read more

Forming the Band

05/05/2016 Main

Things have been going really well with my new Fender Jazzmaster. She plays like a dream and I’m enjoying using her so much that I practice at every given opportunity.  My friends and I have had a couple of jams too, just doing covers of some of our favourite musicians at the moment. My friend James is playing bass, James’ wife Susie in on drums, and I’m lead guitar and vocals. We’re actually sounding pretty good together. Susie is an incredible drummer. She was in an all girl punk band before she settled down and had children. They were pretty well known in our local area and were even getting gigs in London.  Susie is a lot more rock ‘n’ roll than James and I.  We’e both heavily influenced by bands like the Beach Boys, The Everley Brothers and more modern bands such as High Llama and Animal Collective. Susie’s influences, on the other hand, include The Clash, the Dead Kennedy’s and The Ramone’s.  She’s certainly delivering an edgier sound than mine and James’ more mellow, uplifting notes. It seems to work though, somehow.  Susie also writes music and I’ve been playing around with writing some vocals, so we’re starting to out together the chorus for our very own song. Exciting times really are ahead. My wife is being driven a bit bonkers during rehearsals.  Susie and James live in a flat and their neighbours complain if a pin drops, so rehearsals are always at my place and we’re all so excited about the band that they are becoming more and more frequent. If my wife wasn’t so utterly tone deaf I would ask her to join us to provide backing vocals, which might pacify her a little! Perhaps I’ll but her a cow bell… Read more

Turntable Guide

20/01/2016 Main

Welcome back to my blog guys. I’ve been gone a while so thought t was about time I added another article to the blog. I love pretty much all kinds of music. I’m not a massive pop fan but there are some great pop tunes out there still. As I mentioned back in my last post, I love the experience of doing music festivals and a long as there’s a good mix of music, it’s more about the vibe and everybody coming together. Dance music is up there as one of my favourite genres but I tend to just do small venues when it comes to Dance gigs as I find them more fun that way. Read more

Korg

19/11/2015 Main

Afternoon peoples. Hope you read and enjoyed the previous entry. I really enjoy writing about music! Today I want to take the focus away from the drums and talk about my favourite brand of keyboards… Korg. I was fortunate enough to have a Korg is40 when I was 16 and it was the first keyboard I played and just thought “Wow!!” You can play any style on it and it sounds so convincing. It still sounds convincing today and stands up to a lot of very good contemporary keyboards. Korg really know how to make amazing keyboards. The step recording option was really cool and I arranged my A-Level composition task on it. My lecturer was suitably impressed and asked how I had recorded it. Read more

My Love for Drummin'

10/11/2015 Main

Good morning peoples.  It’s Derrick Dyer. I want to talk to you about my love for drumming and playing keyboards. I fell head over heels for the drums when I was five years old. I was watching TV apparently, a music video with my mother, and when the drummer came into shot I started mimicking him. After the video had finished I carried on and wouldn’t stop talking about it for nearly a month. Then my parents decided to take me for drum lessons. I was hooked. I haven’t gone more than two weeks without playing drums for the past 15 years! Read more
